Luis Toharia Grants
Luis Toharia (1951-2012) profoundly influenced research on labour economics in Spain. He exercised his excellent teaching and research abilities at the Universidad de Alcalá in Madrid and had an intense career distinguished by his extraordinary professional and personal qualities.
His research always focused on very relevant and socially concerned issues, marked by his scrupulous and thorough treatment of data. His most important contribution is probably his work related to the measurement of employment and unemployment. He also contributed to the improvement of labour statistics in Spain and, therefore, of the datasets used nowadays by researchers. He left his imprint on many other areas, as well, and his work influenced the development of social and labour market policies. With his well-known extraordinary academic generosity, he trained several generations of labour economists and contributed to open spaces for discussion. He immersed himself in the creation of an academic congress/conference focused on labour economics called the Jornadas de Economía Laboral (abbreviated JEL in Spanish) in 1995 and the creation of the Spanish Association of Labour Economists (Asociación Española de Economía del Trabajo, abbreviated AEET) in 2005. His intellectual honesty, his friendly teaching, and his generosity make him a key figure and a crucial reference for future generations of labour market researchers in Spain.
With the aim of honouring our friend and teacher, Luis, for his interest in and devotion to incorporating our youngest colleagues in the Jornadas de Economía Laboral, the AEET launched a set of grants in 2013 designed particularly to support the participation of budding scholars in the conference / congress.
